The new year is well under way and we have begun our projects that will be featured in this year's Art Show! The Art Show this year will take place on Wednesday, March 7th from 5:30-7:30 in the Cafeteria. Please plan on attending this FREE event!!! The Chorus will also perform during the show! Here's what we've been working on:

November is here and we are moving on to new projects!! Students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades are discussing Relief sculpture and creating awesome art. Students in 1st and 2nd grades are discussing Organic Shapes and using their knowledge to create fantastic fall art. Kindergarten students are working on creating Visual Texture! It's been a great fall!!

Florida Fall weather is here! Cool mornings and warm days! The LSE Fall Festival is this month too! Don't miss it - October 27th. In art this month we are finishing up our vine art and line collage pictures. Kindergarten students are taking home their line and shape collages. Other grades have been painting and using oil pastels to complete their vine pictures - examples of these will be hung around the school soon!

Draw Your Adventure

What You Need:

pencils
paper
pencil crayons or crayons or pastels or markers

What You Do:

Imagine you are going on an adventure.
Ask yourself the following questions:
- "Where are you going on your adventure?" (a distant land, somewhere you've been before? a new place?)
- "How will you get there?" (by car, plane, train, on foot, via a new mode of transportation?)
- "Who will you see when you arrive?" (a friend? a family member? a creature? an alien?)
- "What will you on your adventure?"
Now, draw each detail of your adventure!

DRAW LIKE A CAT
If a cat could draw, would she draw her surroundings differently than a human would? How would your room look from a cat's point-of-view? What, in the room, would be interesting to a cat? Suppose a magical spell is cast upon you and you are turned into a cat for one hour? What are you going to draw?
IMAGINE YOURSELF AS A CAT
First, let's practice being a cat...
Stretch
Arch your back
Extend your claws
Roll over
Sit up quickly
Hunch down
Stare at you friend or neighbor
Rub up against your bed or desk
Look around at the room from a cat's viewpoint.

Now think like a cat...
Where would a cat sleep in your room?
Where could she find food?
Where could she find water?
What would she play with?
Where would she go if she didn't want to be bothered?
What would interest a cat most in your room?
What would she mostly likely try to avoid?
Who would she try to make friends with?

Now that you are a “bona fide” cat, decide where in the room you would most like to “hang out” and what you would do. Take your drawing materials to that part of the room and draw it from a cat's perspective.
When you've finished, look at your drawing. Were you able to take the point-of-view of a cat? How is a cat's perspective on things different from your own? How is this shown in your drawing?

HOW DO ARTISTS DO IT?
How do they come up with such unusual ideas? Artists often get their best ideas from everyday, ordinary experiences. Eating a bowl of cereal in the morning can be an opportunity to begin your day “thinking like an artist.” You sit down. You scoop up some of those tasty morsels and all of a sudden—BOOM! A spaceship roars out of your spoon! How could that happen, you might ask? Thinking like an artist sometimes means making the familiar strange, the ordinary extraordinary. Try it out. It's easy to do, once you set your mind to it!
Materials You Need: magazines with lots of pictures, scissors, glue stick, 9 x 12- inch background paper.
The Project: Go through picture magazines looking for things that might suggest an “artrageous idea.” Don't go for your first idea (that's usually BORING!). Cut out several pictures and then try different combinations. You may need to carefully cut the original background away from some of the images you need. Consider changing size relationships as shown in the picture to the right titled “Big Baby.” Try putting things together we don't usually see together.
Once you have an idea that you think really works, carefully cut out the shapes from their background with scissors. Use a glue stick or white glue to secure your images to a new background paper.
When you finish, put a title on your new picture and show it to someone. If they say, “that's outrageous!” Tell them, “No, that's artrageous!”

Summer Project #2 - Happy Last Day of School!!

Some artists like to paint and draw pictures of the things they like to do and of the places they like to visit. In doing so, they reveal something unique about themselves to others.
In this project, you will get to think about your favorite activity or place and then show it to others in a drawing or painting.
Materials You Need: 12x18 inch white paper; an assortment of markers, crayons or cray-pas. You may also use watercolor paints if they are available. A photograph of your favorite place may be helpful.
The Activity: On a large sheet of white paper, draw a picture of yourself doing something you like to do or in a special place you like to visit. You can use markers, crayons or cray-pas to do your drawing. Outline all the shapes in your drawing with a black color. Fill in the shapes of your drawing using bright colors. If you have watercolors available, use dark colors in the background to make the figures and shapes stand out. When your picture is finished, sign, date, and title it in the bottom right-hand corner.

Artists love to ask the question “What if...?” It allows them to use their imagination and see things in totally new ways. It's a game that anyone can play.

Choose a “What if” from the following list and then draw a picture showing how life would be changed by this new condition. Check back soon for a picture of what I drew!

Thank you so much to every member of the greater Lone Star Community who volunteered and attended our second annual Art Show on March 24th! We had a wonderful turnout and there was much praise for the work of our Lone Star Artists! Great job students on a job well done!

In other news...I got married over Spring Break and now have a new name!! Mrs. Kluge! Pronounced "Clue" - "Gee" (a hard 'g' as in words like 'goose', 'great' and 'game'). I'm sure it will take some getting used to for all of us!!

My favorite season of the year is almost here and the Art Show will take place soon! March 24th from 5:30 to 7:30 in the Cafeteria! I hope to see everyone there. We are still in GREAT need of parent/adult volunteers. Please contact Ms. Kirby if you are able to help! All classes are now finishing up their artwork that will be put on display in the show! We have studied and discussed, Molas made by the Kuna Indians, Tar Beach by Faith Ringgold, sand painting created by Navajo native americans, Pop Art and symbols, Australian Aboriginal artwork and Gyotaku! Oh my! The summer is coming to an end. We are only three weeks away from a brand new school year!! Yes, the summer is sadly ending, however I am very VERY excited for this fall and cannot wait to see all of you back at Lone Star!! In my excitement, I went ahead and posted all eight of the Summer Projects! Make sure you keep any art you have made...I would love to see it. I hope you continue to have a wonderful and safe break. Summer Project 8: Paper Plate Butterfly

Butterflies are awesome! I see them all of the time during the summer! I also remember many of you introducing me to the butterflies you watched hatch in your classrooms last year!

You Will Need:
Paper plate
Toilet paper roll
Markers, colored pencils, crayons or paint
Scissors
Glue
Googly eyes (optional)
Pipe-cleaners, sticks or twigs

Directions:
1. Paint or color the paper plate with any design you want. (I used blue circles.)
2. Paint or color the toilet paper roll any color you want. (I used black.)
3. Cut the paper plate in half for the butterfly wings. (I cut my paper plate in the middle but cut a wavy line.)
4. Glue the wings on the toilet paper roll. (Look at the picture below for help.)
5. Add the eyes. You can draw and color them or glue on googly eyes.
6. Glue the sticks, twigs or pipe-cleaners between the eyes for antennae.

Summer Art Project 7: Egg Flowers

Who doesn't like flowers? Here's a cool way to make flowers that never need water at home!

You will need:
For the Flowers
egg cartons
mini muffin liners/cups - or just regular paper cut into circles
pipe cleaners or twigs/sticks
sharp pencil
glitter and glue (optional)
paint (optional)

For the Vase
paper towel or toilet paper roll
yogurt or butter/margarine lid
markers or paint
glitter and glue (optional)

Directions:
For the Flowers
1. Cut the egg carton apart so you have single 'cups'.
2. Take one egg cup and poke a hole in the middle with a sharp pencil (be careful)!
3. Poke a hole in the muffin liner or circle-cut paper.
4. Poke the twigs or sticks or pipe cleaners through both holes. If you are using pipe cleaner twist the ends to hold the 'flowers' on.
5. Repeat until you have a bouquet of flowers.

For the Vase
1. Decorate a paper towel or toilet paper roll using paint, markers, pencil or crayon.
2. Glue the yogurt lid to the bottom of the toilet paper roll and let it dry.
3. Place your bouquet inside the vase!

Summer Project 6: All About Me Collage

Collages are always entertaining art projects to make. This collage will be one that describes you and the things you like!
You will need:
Scissors
Glue
Pencils, crayons, markers or paint
Fabric, yarn, buttons
Old magazines and photographs (ONLY with your parent's/guardian's permission!)
Large piece of construction paper or two sheets of printer paper taped together or a large paper grocery bag

Directions:

1. Find pictures in the magazines that show things you like. Cut them out and glue them to the large piece of paper. These could be anything from pictures of animals to computer games, cars or musical groups.
2. Add embellishments (fun, extras!) like buttons, yarn or noodles to make your collage more interesting to look at.
3.. After it has dried hang your collage for all to see!

Summer Project 5: Wind Chimes

I love wind chimes! I have two at my house - one made of seashells and another made of bamboo. Here is an interesting way to make a wind chime out of some things you might have around your house.

You will need:
Scissors
Paper plate
Plastic dinner-ware (spoons, forks and/or knives)
Sharp pencil
String or yarn

Directions:
1. Cut the string or yarn in a few different lengths.
2. Tie the string or yarn to the end of the cutlery (the plastic dinner-ware).
3. Poke holes in the paper plate. Put the string or yarn through and tie a knot in each piece.
4. Fasten three pieces of string to the top of the plate.
5. Decorate the paper plate with crayons, markers, pencil or paint!!
6. Ask an adult to help you hand the wind chime!

Summer Project 4: Family Flags

It is nearly Independence Day (July 4th)! The day we celebrate our nation's independence. Many Americans proudly fly the American Flag during this time of year. Seeing all of the flags, I was inspired to make a Family Flag! I hope you will make one too!

You will need:
(If you don't have all of these things, that is okay! You can make a great flag with just paper and pencil, if necessary.)
Construction paper (or any paper you have at home)
Crayons
Markers
Colored Pencils
Paint
Stick (I found one outside in the yard!)
Scissors

Directions:
1. Use a piece of paper to create your Family Flag on.
2. Use pencils, crayons, colored pencils, markers or paint to draw and color symbols that represent your family. Ask yourself these questions to get started: Who is in your family? What does your family like to do together? What colors does your family like? (See some of the photos below for more ideas.)
3. If you want cut the paper on the edge for fringe (or cut tiny triangles) for extra decoration.
4. Tape or glue the edge of your flag to the stick.
5. After it is dry, wave it proudly!!

Summer Project 3: Origami Animals!

Origami is the art of folding paper into shapes to represent animals, plants or just about anything else you can think of! Origami started in the 1600's in Japan (ori mean 'folding' and kami means 'paper'). See below for some fun things you can make at home.

Origami Dog Face
1. Start with your paper white side up.Fold in half then open.
2. Fold the top corner down to the bottom corner.
3. Fold the two top corners down to the points shown
4. Fold the uppermost layer of the bottom corner up a little way
5. Fold this layer up again, from the top of the triangle as shown
6. Add eyes and a nose to the dog’s face. If you like you can even add a tongue! Finished Talking Dog!

To make your dog talk, hold the model by the ears and move back and forwards shown by the arrows.

Many artists use things from our everyday lives to create awesome art - including numbers, letters and even words! Graphic Design is art that is used for such things as making logos, letterheads, packages, advertisements, posters, books, web pages and other stuff!

Summer Project 1: Play Dough

Play dough or craft dough is very easy to make at home! You only need a few items from the kitchen. **Be sure to ask an adult's permission before you make this in your home! **Maybe they can help you!**

Play-Dough was first made in Ohio (USA) as a wallpaper cleaner in the 1930's! A classroom of children began using the wallpaper cleaner for art projects, the product was re-made and given to schools in the 1950's! Cool!

Remember: Just because you are in the kitchen does not mean you are making something to eat. DO NOT EAT PLAY DOUGH!

You will need:
2 cups flour
1 cup water
1 cup salt
1 tablespoon cooking oil (vegetable oil)
Instructions:
1. Mix the flour, salt and water in a bowl. Add a small amount of oil (to keep the dough from hardening).
2. Knead the play dough. Store it in an airtight container or it will harden!

2010 is going to be a great year for Art here at Lone Star! Mark your calendars for the APRIL 15th - ART FAIR. All students will have framed work on display. All students, their families, friends and teachers are invited to take part in the gallery experience. Please plan to attend! Upcoming Art Projects Kindergarten: Students will be studying The Boating Party by Mary Cassatt and other works of art concerning family groups. They will create artwork depicting their own families. 1st Grade: Students will be studying the artwork of Joan Miro and discussing organic shapes. They will design and paint original compositions based on organic shapes. 2nd Grade: Students will study the artwork of Vincent Van Gogh, focusing on his work, Sunflowers. They will create their own versions of the still-life and learn about the art movement Expressionism. 3rd Grade: Students will create watercolor seascape paintings based on knowledge of the artist, Winslow Homer, and the Japanese art of origami. 4th/5th Grades: Students will create self-portraits based on the style of Pop Art and learn about the artist Roy Lichtenstein. We are heading into a new cycle of lessons and I am so excited to watch our artists think about and create great art! Here's a brief run-down of what we will be learning: All classes will be focusing on Color! Kindergarten: We will be learning about and creating color wheels. We will be making connections to the use of color in art and where we see color in the world around us. 1st and 2nd grade: We will be creating color wheels and learning weaving/textile techniques. 3rd and 4th grade: We will be reviewing the color wheel, warm and cool colors and exploring monochromatic color schemes. 5th grade: We will be studying Georgia O'Keefe's art and discussing neutral, analogous, as well as, warm and cool color schemes. FALL FESTIVAL on Friday October 16th from 5:30-8:00pm! Come check out the painterly pumpkins at the Silent Pumpkin Auction booth!!

Great Art Start!

The year has gotten off to a great start! Here is a brief run down of what we have currently been thinking about and creating in art! In all classes we have been reviewing how lines, shapes and color can be combined to create great pieces of art. Kindergarten: Students have been learning about lines and fingerpainting. 1st grade: We have been discussing shapes and creating collages. 2nd and 4th grades: Students have been discussing how to create patterns using various lines and shapes. We have been working on creating new species of insects. 3rd grade: Students have been painting using the 'wet on wet' technique with watercolor. We have been discussing John James Audubon's "American Flamingo" and we are creating some of our own. 5th grade: We have been discussing free-form, irregular shapes in nature and are creating some of our own using tempera paints. The "blottos" we are creating will be put into a larger collage once dried. Hope to see many faces during our Resource Extravaganza for the first Open House tonight!! Stop by the media center from 6-8pm after visiting your classroom!

Our blog will now be used as an overview of information for the 2009-2010 school year. This year our theme at Lone Star is "Lights, Camera, Action!" Art in the Light will serve as a spotlight for our school's Art Program!

A Doodle

The following post is taken from The Art Book For Children - Book Two, text by Amanda Renshaw, published by Phaidon, pages 10-13. Do you ever doodle when you're bored? As you add more lines and shapes, do things sometimes emerge that are recognizable as animals, birds, or even people? One day, Henry Moore was playing with a piece of wax, pushing and prodding at it with his fingers and thumbs until he thought it began to look like a strange head with horns, a beard and a long thing nose. As he kept playing with it, the shape grew a crown and became, he thought, like the head of a king. The fact that it looked more like a king's head to him than any other kind of head might have been because he'd recently been reading stories about kings, queens and princesses to his daughter Mary. When he had finished the figure with the king-like head, Moore made a body and then added another person. King and Queen started life as a small piece of wax that you could hold in your hand and became a bronze sculpture that is 5 feet, 4 inches high. It now sits near the brow of a hill in Scotland looking south over a reservoir toward the English border. Have a look at the pictures below.

Although this king and queen have no country to reign over, they do seem to command the beautiful landscape around them as they sit regally and serenely surveying their imaginary kingdom. Moore made the king and queen appear regal by keeping the figures simple. Their feet are placed firmly on the ground in front of them. They sit comfortably, but don't slouch, and their hands, placed on their laps and on the bench, help them to appear calm and still. Next time you start doodling, don't stop! Just imagine what it could turn into!

Hanging Sculpture

Materials: paper (I used white, but any color will do.) markers, crayons, or colored pencils scissors stapler, tape or glue

Step 1: Create drawings/designs on your paper. For my sculpture, I used three drawings, but you could use more if you wish.

Step 2: Use scissors to cut your pictures into strips. (Cut straight lines across the paper.)

Step 3: Bend each strip so that it forms a circle shape. Use a stapler to connect the ends. (You may also use tape or glue. Remember if you use glue, you must have patience and wait for the circle shapes to dry.)

Step 4: Once you create your first circle, loop them together to form a chain. I used a center circle and then attached various chains. See how many ways you can hang your sculpture. Only hang your sculpture where an adult has given you permission!! I used my refrigerator and hung mine with magnets!

Paper Plate Instrument

Materials: 2 paper plates stapler, tape or glue uncooked rice (uncooked popcorn kernels, small twigs, small rocks, or shells will work too!) markers, crayons or colored pencils

Step 1: Begin with two paper plates. Turn them over and create designs/pictures by drawing with markers, crayons or colored pencils.

Step 2: Turn one of the plates over and place a handful of uncooked rice (or one of the other materials listed above).

Step 3: Place the empty plate on top of the filled plate. Be careful to line up the edges. Use a stapler around the edges to keep the plates together. (Tape or glue may be used as well. Remember if you decide to use glue it you will have to be patient and let it dry overnight.)

Step 4: After the paper plates have been put together, shake and play your Paper Plate Instrument!! You've created art with rhythm!! Enjoy!

Magazine Beaded Jewelry

Magazine Beaded Jewelry

Step 1 Gather old magazines. Draw different size triangles onto the pages. I used a black marker but you can use a pencil or crayon. Step 2 Use scissors to cut out the triangles.

You should have various size triangles, so that you can make

different size beads.

Step 3 Wrap the triangles around a pencil. Start wrapping at the widest part of the triangle. (Most of the time, the bottom.)

Step 4 After wrapping around the pencil, place a dot of glue on the tip of the triangle.

Press and hold the glued tip. Count to 20. (Your fingers will get a bit sticky during this part!)

Slide the wrapped triangles off of the pencil so they can dry.

Make a lot of beads!

Step 5 Cut a piece of string or yarn. (Dental floss works great too!) Remember to cut the string the right size - so it will fit

over your head as a necklace (or around your wrist as a bracelet).

Step 6 String the beads onto the yarn.

Tie a knot and wear with pride!!!

Art In The Light with Ms. Kirby

The sun is shining! Summertime is finally here! Continue being creative and beat the heat on a hot day... attend Lone Star's Online Art Camp with Ms. Kirby. Projects will be posted on this blog throughout the summer. Student art that is created and brought in at the beginning of the 2009 school year will be showcased at Open House!
